It used to be called The Day of Songs, and only choruses took part. Then 77 choruses (3 thousand singers) performed in front of 50 thousand listeners.
In 1950, The Day of Songs was supplemented by the Day of Dances. The festival was created by 57 dance groups, 41 ensembles playing panpipes, and 13 orchestras of wind-instruments. The children‘s chorus consisted of 3570 singers.
With restoration of Lithuania‘s independence, the 13th Lithuania Song Festival arranged in 1990 was called ‘national’. Since 1990, the event is organized every 4 years at the beginning of July.
