Poland Art 2013

Polish Post issued three postage stamps depicting paintings by Stanislaw Wyspianski:

The first stamp with value of 1,60 zl shows Ludwik Solski in the role of the Guardian in the drama “Treasure” by L. Staffa, 1904;

The second stamp having the value of 2.35 zl illustrates Ludwik Solski as Aguecheek in Shakespear’s “Twelfth Night”, 1904;

The third stamp of 3,80 zl features Ludwik Solski as old Wiarusa in “Warszawianka” by S. Wyspianski, 1904.

Stanislaw Wyspianski (1869-1907) was a Polish playwright, painter and poet, as well as interior and furniture designer. A patriotic writer, he created a series of symbolic, national dramas within the artistic philosophy of the Young Poland Movement. Wyspianski was one of the most outstanding and multifaceted artists of his time in Poland under the foreign partitions.

Ludwik Solski (1855 – 1954) was a Polish stage actor and theatre director. From his stage debut in 1876 until his death (his last performance took place six months after his 99th birthday) he played in nearly a thousand roles. Between 1905 and 1913 he was the director-general of the municipal theatre in Cracow. He worked in various Polish theatres in the period 1918-1939 and returned to Cracow in 1944. Since 1954 he has been the patron of the Academy for the Dramatic Arts in Cracow.
