The subject of the 1989 Christmas stamps of Norway was Christmas tree decorations.

The custom of decorating trees as Christmas time originated in Southern Germany and can be traced back to the sixteenth century. Since then it has spread to other countries and has become the symbol of Christmas in the protestant countries of Northern Europe. In Norway the custom of Christmas trees is not much more than 150 years old.

Designed by Vladimir Antonov in modern festive colours, the stamps were issued on November 24 and printed in multi-colour offset by Emil Moestue.

Since 1982, Norwegian Christmas stamps have been issued in booklets of 10 stamps in practical denominations for everyone wishing to send Christmas greetings in the mail.
