Iceland museum (1963)

The National Museum of Reykjavik was 100 years old on February 24, 1963 and on the occasion of this anniversary the Icelandic postal authorities placed on sale two commemorative stamps.

The founder of the Museum was the painter Sigurdur Gudmundsson (1833-1874), and his portrait appears on one of the stamps, a kr. 4.00. On the other value, kr. 5.50, the motif is a reproduction of a woodcarving from about 1200 AD, “Le Chevalier au Lion” killing the dragon. The original is on a door from the church of Valthjofsstad and now in the custody of the National Museum.
The stamps were printed by Courvoisier S.A.
