Holland’s philatelic contribution to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprises five brightly-coloured stamps. Four of them have a different sports motif – sailing, sprinting, hockey and water-polo.
“The “Sprinter’ (5c.) is a tribute to the “Flying Housewife” Fanny Blankers-Koen of Holland, who won three titles in the 1948 Olympic Games at Wembley. These were the one hundred and two hundred metres sprints, and the eighty metres hurdles events.
The fifth stamp (7 ½ c.) is dedicated to the ancient Olympic Games: it shows an amphora or two-handled dinking jar of exquisite shape, decorated with figures of athletes.
