And the winner is …
… the stamp by the painters and plasterers! Their job is predominantly about making things look nicer or different using colour, texture, effects and techniques. The right tool and knowing how to use it are key success factors.
In the SwissSkills Bern 2014 stamp competition, the Swiss Association of Painters and Plasterers fought off competition from ten other entrants to be crowned winners.
Graphic designer Urs Lieber, who designed the stamp on behalf of the association, decided to base the motif on paint- ers’ and plasterers’ tools: paintbrushes, rollers, scrapers, smoothing trowels, plaster iron, but also buckets and tins of paint. We are surrounded by colour in our daily lives, and it has an influence on how we feel. Colour is therefore a key element of the stamps. The design focuses on the interplay between colour and form. The stamp is also designed to appeal to young people, which is why there are bright and contrasting colours.
Apprentice project
As part of an apprentice project, four painters and two plasterers created the stamp motif in 173×143cm format. Various specialised techniques were used to create it. The apprentices were highly motivated, and the project gave them the opportunity to practise precision work and try out new techniques. The young professionals achieved sensational results and created a true work of art that re- quired a great deal of skill and precision.
