The historical background of the European Union lies in the World War II. In 1950s, the European Coal and Steel Community started to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace.
Initially, the six founders, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, cooperated mainly in the areas of trade and economy. At present, 28 EU member states with almost 500 million people are solving many other issues directly related with our everyday life.
On the 1st of May 2004, Lithuania and other nine countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Poland, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Hungary) became one of the then 25 EU members states with full rights.
