The Ghent Flower Show is still going strong. Here is some information:
Mentioning the Floraliën immediately brings Ghent to mind. This year, the Royal Agricultural and Botanical Society, the organiser of the Floraliën flower show, would have been in existence for 200 years. Reason enough to pay a floral tribute to the city centre. There are activities throughout the year highlighting the city’s plant and flower festival.
Floral splendour in the centre of Ghent
In 1808 it was an inn that served as the exhibition’s venue. Nowadays, it is Flanders Expo that is the venue for the flower show which is held every five years. Like their host city, the Floraliën flower show has come a long way to become what it is today.
The next Floraliën will take place in 2010. However, the 200th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural and Botanical Society should not pass by unnoticed. Many events will take place linked to the Floraliën show during the jubilee year of 2008.
A classical concert planned for February will mark the start of the year in musical fashion. An ornamental horticulture conference will take place in April in cooperation with the University of Ghent and the bio-engineering science faculty. An exhibition called “Treasures and Archives” was also held which gave an overview of the history of the Ghent flower show.
But the absolute highlight will be on 21 September when an historical procession will pass through the kuip van gent, the historical heart of the city. The theme of the procession is the history of the Floraliën flower show and Ghent as host city. 1 200 extras and 50 riders will be playing out various scenes on floats to illustrate their past. A scene in the Frascati inn, home of the first Floraliën, will lead the procession.
The well-known revolution by the people of Ghent against Emperor Charles V, which gave them the nickname of “stroppendragers” or noose bearers, will also be dealt with. The procession is, moreover, a unique event to which Ghent’s twinned cities will also be invited. The organisers are convinced that this will attract around 10 000 visitors.
I would like to congratulate you on your many informative articles. A Godsend to people living away from philatelic clubs and libraries.
