Letters in the corner of early British stamps arranged in double alphabetical sequence throughout each sheet, so that no two stamps on a sheet bore an identical combination. The letters were at first in the two lower corners, but later the upper corners were provided with letters which are the same as in the lower corners, but in reverse order.
