Russia 1971 sheet

More than 44,000,000,000 postal items were handled by the Soviet postal service in 1971 and 100 million were served daily. Over 80,000 permanent and mobile post offices were in use. The principal operations of mail processing were mechanised at 22 large post offices and at more than 400 production shops and divisions.

The techniques of mail processing were undergoing simplification and automation, and a whole range of automatic equipment was introduced.

To facilitate the task of postal workers, mail in low-temperature zones in winter was delivered via so-called exchange hatches, which were provided with special shields to keep out the cold.

Preparations were being made for the introduction of postal coding. Automated letter-sorting machines using a six-digit indexing system were being developed. Each postal establishment was assigned its six-digit index, and explanatory work among the population was being carried out through films and manuals.
