The 1 franc issue pictured is one of four recess-printed stamps issued in 1941 with the portrait of Marshal Pétain as head of state.
The Third Republic came to an end on 10 July 1940. The inscription ‘Republique Française’ (French Republic) or the monogram RF were henceforth omitted from stamp designs and the inscription ‘Postes Françaises’ (French Posts) adopted instead.
