The definitive series of 1930-1944 was unusual, as French colonial sets went, in that four of its designs were typographed, while the fifth was recess-printed.

A Sakalava chief, Bbetsileo woman, Hova girl and Zebu cattle formed the subjects of typographed designs, while the recess design portrayed General Galliéni, hero of the Marne and a former governor of Madagascar.

Between 1936 and 1940 a photogravure version of the Galliéni design was produced in values from 3centimes to 3 franc.
