A few adhesive postage stamps have been printed direct from the die, held in a handle, and struck in the manner of a postmark or rubber stamp. Many surcharges have been similarly hand-stamped. The majority of postmarks for all purposes were hand-stamped until the introduction of electrical rotating-machine postmarks.
