A number printed in the margins of British and colonial and some foreign sheets of stamps showing the sequence of plates made at the printers’ works, independent of duty (face value), purpose (postal, telegraph, or fiscal), or of the country or colony for which the plate was provided. It is not to be confused with either “control” or the “plate number”.
