The year 2015 marks Singapore’s 50th year of independence.Singapore Post launched a new stamp set to celebrate the golden jubilee. This is the third and final set ‘A Brighter Future Together’ commemorates 50 years of independence by celebrating the country’s hopes for the future.
The Independence of Singapore Agreement 1965 was an agreement between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Singapore that granted independence to Singapore with effect from 9 August 1965. The Singapore Act 1966 followed the treaty.
As a result of the agreement, Singapore achieved full independence from Malaysia.
After the separation, the fledgling nation had to become self-sufficient, and faced problems including mass unemployment, housing shortages and lack of land and natural resources such as petroleum.
Singapore is one of the world’s major commercial hubs, the fourth-largest financial centre and one of the top two busiest container ports in the world for at least the past ten years. Singapore places highly in international rankings with regard to standard of living, education, healthcare, and economic competitiveness. Singapore has one of the highest per capita incomes and one of the longest overall life expectancies in the world.
