Stamps of Greenland: Arctic Winter Games (2015)

The Arctic Winter Games (AWG) are to be held from 6th to 12th March 2016.

For the second time Nuuk will be the host city for the Arctic Winter Games, where Inuit and Sami compete for a week. The sports disciplines will be both traditional Inuit sports and skiing as well as more modern sports such as ice hockey, volleyball and indoor football.

POST Greenland will provide inter alia support for the event by releasing an additional value stamp for the benefit of the Arctic Winter Games.

The first Arctic Winter Games were held in 1970. Greenland participated for the first time in 1990.

AWG is much more than a sporting event. It is a cultural hub where young people get the opportunity to see others from their own hometown, the opportunity to test their athletic abilities, be together with other young people across the country, with other cultures and languages. In addition to the sporting activities, AWG also provides a cultural exchange with other young people from the other participating countries.

Greenland has created a good reputation for itself through its participation in recent Games. These Games have showcased Greenland’s cultural activities throughout the ages and has given pride and increased self-esteem to the participants and, not least, shown to the outside world that Greenland’s youth function at a high cultural level. Membership of the Arctic Winter Games makes Greenland participate equally with the other Arctic countries. Every two years many young people participate in an event which steers them along a positive track and gives them unforgettable experiences to which they hold on to throughout their lives.
