Tierra del Fuego is literally at the end of the Earth. It is an island at the very southern tip of South America, separated from the mainland by the Magellan Straits, where a private local post was operating in the 1890s.

The post had been organised by a Romanian, Julius Popper, who had been granted an Argentinean gold-mining concession. A 10 centavos red stamp was issued about 1891, designed by Rudolph Soucop and lithographed by Juan H. Kidd & Company of Buenos Aires.

It showed mining equipment and a letter, with P for Pepper in the centre. Mail was carried by mounted couriers to the sea and from then by boat to the mainland. Letters had to bear Argentine or Chilean stamps in addition to the local one.

Stamps are occasionally found in old collections. They are not scarce and can often be located on internet auctions. And remember when you find one; you have a complete country collection!
